A permanent land exhibit at the Carey Furnace showcases what was once one of the most important eras of American History. Pittsburgh was once the heart of the steel industry, and exhibit@FURNACE exhibits the importance of the cities past and the products innovative future. As a steel infested landscape rolls into a museum that showcases steel's history, the architecture spans and floats to show its future. The structural steel shell conceptually protects the vulnerable lightweight programmatic boxes from the exterior environment while it opens up to a continuous view of the Carey Furnace and shields the galleries from the direct sunlight.
